April 3 - CFD's 47th Annual Spring Gala!

Dear Friend of Community Free Democrats,

Please join us for CFD's 47th Annual Gala on Sunday, April 3, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Bella Luna Restaurant, 584 Columbus Avenue (between 88th and 89th Streets). It’s a highlight of the New York political calendar, where we break bread and chat with leaders who make us proud to be Democrats with progressive values. With so many races, from President and U.S. Senate on down, we’ll have lots of gossip to trade and plans to map out.

Our very own Congressman Jerry Nadler will receive CFD's 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. Stephan Russo, widely-acclaimed Executive Director of Goddard Riverside Community Center, will be awarded our Distinguished Community Leader Award. The Michalski-Leutner Community Activism Award will recognize several neighbors in both the 67th and 69th ADs who make a huge difference. We’ll salute activists working together to block a high-rise nursing home from being built on overdeveloped West 97th Street, specifically, Maggi Peyton and the Park West Village Tenants Association, along with Rene Kathawala, who’s both a PS 163 parent and the attorney representing the Parent Association in their struggle. We’ll also honor Melissa Elstein, indefatigable co-founder of the West 80’s Neighborhood Association.

For decades, CFD leaders like Jerry Nadler, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer and Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal have contributed to the Upper West Side's nationwide reputation for progressive Democratic leadership. By helping CFD continue to be a proving ground for excellent public servants, you’ll be helping keep our party and its principles strong.

Your contribution and presence will help advance our shared political and social agenda, including fighting to expand affordable housing, rent laws and other tenant protections; advocating for workers' protections and a living wage; protecting the environment; and clearing paths to equal justice in areas such as voting rights, criminal justice and human rights.

Sponsorship categories, which include a listing on the invitation, are: Angel ($1,500), Benefactor ($550), and Patron ($350). The regular ticket price is $250 (no listing). Invitations to this popular event will be circulated to approximately 2,000 West Siders and political and civic leaders, and sponsors will be featured on the CFD website, cfdnyc.org.

The deadline to be included on the invitation is March 15, 2016. Direct any questions to Suzanne Jacobson at sjacobny@aol.com or 212-873-5187. We look forward to seeing you on April 3.

1,000 Turkey Appeal; CFD Holiday Party Date Is Set!

This is the first of a few CFD notices listing opportunities for each of us to volunteer our services or to donate goods or money to organizations in our neighborhood that stretch to meet the needs of the less fortunate year round, but particularly during this holiday season.

Our thanks to our friends at DNAInfo.com for this list of Thanksgiving options,

West Side Campaign Against Hunger
263 W. 86th St.

Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24

The Thousand Turkey Challenge is the product of an interfaith coalition of churches and synagogues from the neighborhood that band together to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to low-income families.

The West Side Campaign Against Hunger is one of the main drop-off points for the turkeys. WSCAH is a supermarket-style food bank that allows recipients to shop for what they need at its pantry.

Donate a turkey at WSCAH on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m.; Monday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; or Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Note: The turkey must be frozen.

The Campaign can also use volunteers on those days to help with turkey intake, said executive director Stewart Desmond.

For those who can't drop off a turkey but want to participate, text TURKEY to 77948 (the birds cost $18 each) or donate that amount online at www.wscah.org.

For more information, email turkeys@wscah.org or call (212) 362-3662 x 127.

For those who can help the day before, on Nov. 25, volunteers are also needed to pick up food and make deliveries. Email holidaymeals@goddard.org or call 212-873-6600 ext. 301 for more info.

Goddard Riverside

Volunteers are welcome to serve a meal at the soup kitchen at Goddard Riverside from 12 to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. They are also needed to help with clean-up between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Goddard Riverside welcomes the donation of homemade pies, cookies and cakes, or packaged versions.

Sep 29 - Bi-Annual County Committee Meeting

Attention all County Committee Members in the 67th and 69th Assembly Districts!

New York County has issued a call for all County Committee Members in Manhattan to attend the 2015 County Committee Meeting.

Tuesday, September 29
Doors open at 6 p.m., meeting begins promptly at 6:30 p.m.
SVA Theater, 333 West 23rd St. between 8th & 9th Avenues.

As you know, once every two years all members of the New York County Committee are summoned to attend a county-wide meeting that elects officers and sets rules for the County that will be in effect until after the 2017 public and party primaries.

We suspect that many of you have not received a notice of this meeting, which is usually sent out by the County after the fall primaries.

Many of you petitioned this past summer to qualify yourselves for County Committee. Even if you didn't petition, but you agreed to be on County Committee when we contacted you last May, you should attend this meeting. If you have any questions, please contact your CFD District Leaders MarcLandis@gmail.com, cfdjoan@aol.com (Joan Paylo) or Nprigo@gmail.com (Nick Prigo).
